A Simple Side Dish That Stole the Show
Some recipes don’t need a long list of ingredients to become family favorites. My grandmother’s broccoli and cauliflower was one of those simple dishes that proved a few humble ingredients could create something truly unforgettable.
She would make broccoli, cauliflower, or sometimes both together, depending on what was fresh. Everything was gently steamed until perfectly tender, then tossed with fresh sliced garlic and finished with a generous drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil. As the vegetables cooked, they created a light, flavorful broth that collected at the bottom of the pot. In our family, that broth was just as treasured as the vegetables themselves.
No one came to the table without a loaf of good crusty Italian bread. We would tear off pieces and dunk them into those savory garlic-infused juices, making sure not a single drop went to waste. Honestly, sometimes we fought over who got the last piece of bread to soak up the bottom of the bowl!
To this day, the aroma of steaming broccoli, cauliflower, garlic, and olive oil takes me right back to my grandmother’s kitchen, where family dinners were filled with laughter, love, and everyone gathered around one table.
