Grandma’s Pasta e Piselli

Some recipes are more than food. They are memories served in a bowl.

When the weather started to cool in the fall, Grandma would often make Pasta e Piselli, or “Pasta with Peas.” It wasn’t a fancy meal, and that was part of its charm. In about thirty minutes, the kitchen would fill with the sweet aroma of onions cooking in olive oil and the comforting scent of tomato sauce simmering on the stove.

I can still picture her moving around the kitchen with ease, preparing dinner while talking about her day. The table would already be set before the meal was ready. Bowls would be lined up, waiting to be filled, and right in the center of the table sat a big chunk of Pecorino Romano cheese wrapped in wax paper. Next to it was the hand grater, because in Grandma’s house, everyone grated their own cheese exactly the way they liked it.

There was nothing complicated about this dish. Just onions, peas, pasta, sauce, and cheese. Yet somehow it tasted like comfort, family, and home. The medium pasta shells were always the best choice because they caught little bits of sauce and peas in every bite. Grandma made it often because it was simple, affordable, and filling, a meal that brought everyone to the table.

Today, every bowl of Pasta e Piselli brings back memories of those family dinners, the sound of laughter around the table, and Grandma’s quiet way of making everyone feel cared for.
