Ohhh… this one right here? This is Christmas Eve.
If you ever walked into an Italian house on Christmas Eve… you better be ready for yelling, screaming, crying, laughing, hugging, and every emotion possible!
Because this wasn’t just dinner… this was THE Feast of the Seven Fishes.
Well… at least that’s what everyone called it.
Meanwhile, in our family, seven fishes wasn’t nearly enough. We made closer to twenty different kinds of fish!
The kitchen was absolute organized chaos.
Garlic was flying.
Lemons were bouncing off somebody’s head.
The olive oil kept getting passed around from one person to the next.
Someone was yelling, “Hurry up! Everybody’s coming soon!”
And God forbid you served fish cold… everything had to be piping hot…
Except for this dish right here.
Frutti di Mare was always the one beautiful cold seafood salad waiting on the table.
This recipe wasn’t something you could rush. You had to finely chop what felt like a million cloves of garlic, squeeze fresh lemons, drizzle in good olive oil, and gently toss all that beautiful seafood together. Every bite tasted fresh, bright, and full of love.
And just like every Christmas Eve, everyone had a job. There was no sitting around watching TV. If you had two hands, you were helping.
Then finally…
The kitchen got quiet.
We all gathered around the table together.
My father would stand at the head of the table, bow his head, and pray over the food. He thanked God for every blessing He had given our family, for our health, our home, and for bringing us together one more Christmas Eve.
Of course… as kids, we couldn’t help ourselves.
While Dad was praying, my sisters and I would secretly peek one eye open to see who was really praying.
The second we caught someone else peeking too… we’d start giggling.
My mother would give us the look… and somehow we’d make it through the prayer trying not to laugh.
Those are the moments I remember the most.
Not just the incredible food… but the love, the laughter, the faith, and the beautiful family traditions that made Christmas Eve so special.
Every time I make this Frutti di Mare, I’m right back in that kitchen… surrounded by my family, listening to everyone talk over one another, smelling the garlic and fresh lemons, and thanking God for the blessing of carrying these traditions on.
Because recipes eventually become memories… and memories become family treasures that last forever.
A cold seafood salad loaded with shrimp, calamari, and octopus… all soaked in lemon, garlic, olive oil, and herbs.
It gets BETTER the longer it sits. Minimum overnight. No cheating.
