There was something so special about the weekends in our house because they almost always meant one thing…

Homemade calzones.

My mom and my grandmother would start making the dough early in the day, and before long my sisters and I would be standing right beside them, asking if it was time to help yet.

The best part was that they always made us feel like we were part of the cooking. They would each give us our own little ball of dough, and we thought we were making the biggest, most beautiful calzones in the world. We took our jobs very seriously, even though ours usually looked a little funny! My mother and grandmother would smile, encourage us, and tell us how wonderful they looked.

Then came the moment we could hardly wait for.

We’d sit in front of the oven door with our faces practically pressed against the glass, watching those little calzones slowly puff up into beautiful golden pockets. It was like watching magic happen right before our eyes.

As soon as they came out of the oven, nobody wanted to wait for them to cool. We’d tear one open and watch the hot, melted cheese stretch with every bite. Then we’d dip it into my mother’s homemade marinara sauce, and somehow it became even more delicious.

The kitchen was always filled with laughter, flour covered every countertop, and someone was always sneaking a piece of mozzarella before the calzones were finished. Those simple weekends are some of the happiest memories of my childhood.

I’m so grateful my mother and grandmother taught us that recipes are about so much more than food. They taught us that cooking together creates memories, traditions, and moments that stay with you forever.

Today, every time I make these calzones, I’m right back in that kitchen with my family, watching the dough rise, smelling the fresh bread baking, and remembering just how lucky I was to grow up surrounded by so much love.
