Some of my favorite childhood memories happened in my grandmother Pizzo’s kitchen, especially during the fall. As soon as the weather started getting cooler, this was one of the first meals she’d make. The smell of sweet Italian sausage roasting alongside potatoes, onions, and garlic would fill every room in the house, and before long everyone would wander into the kitchen asking, “Is it ready yet?”
I can still remember standing beside my grandmother, helping her peel the potatoes. We’d wash them together and let them soak while she prepared everything else. Then came my least favorite job… cutting the onions! Every single time my eyes would start tearing, and my grandmother would laugh while I tried not to cry. Before long we were both giggling together in the kitchen.
Grandma never bought her meat from the grocery store. She always went to the neighborhood butcher and picked out the freshest sweet Italian sausage herself. If she needed fish, she went to the fish market. She believed the best meals always started with the best ingredients, and she taught us that taking the extra time was always worth it.
Once everything was seasoned and tucked into the oven, the magic began. The aroma of roasting sausage, garlic, onions, and potatoes drifted through the entire house, making it impossible to wait for dinner.
This was one of those meals that brought everyone to the table without having to call them twice. Simple ingredients… incredible flavor… and memories I’ll cherish forever.
